I noted yesterday when reading the newspaper that it was 205 years to the day that Mr Dickens was born on 7th February 1812. It was on reading this that I decided that it was a fitting tribute to a great writer to then write something myself about his works. I remember my Father coming back from the great City of London when he was called there for work with an installment of the Pickwick Papers and I was enthralled by Mr Dickens’ work from that day forward.
I can recall my first years as a successful confectioner travelling around the great county of Yorkshire and across the Pennines to the city of Manchester by railroad and carriage reading David Copperfield and other fine works as they became available during the 1850s and 60s. My wife and I have always enjoyed reading to the children too and the Christmas Carol was a great favourite of ours and theirs.
It is always good to think that when someone looks back on your life it is with a smile and I certainly do with Mr Dickens. I do hope that one day people will do the same with me and my rambunctious confections!
