Hello there. Glad you could drop by and behold my afternoonified new premises for yourself. Splendid aren’t they? Let me give you a tour of the facilities and then you can partake of some of my first rate confectionary for yourself.
Whilst I show you the sights, let me give you a little bit of my history by way of explanation of how I came to be a world famous maker and purveyor of such uncommonly good viands.
I started back in 1848 making my fine confections in my shop in Sheffield and selling them to my discerning patrons. Of course, little remains from the very early days but here are some priceless pieces from the 19th Century for all those interested in how it all began.
My shop is on the left underneath the George Hotel with our friendly Policeman out front. He always enjoyed a piece of my Mint Rock while on patrol. c 1895
Early advertising from the 1850s until the 1880s
I liked to keep my customers informed of all the interesting goings on in our business. This was an address I sent to them all in 1886 to inform them of why my Mint Rock was the best and what the New Year had in store.
It is always good to make sure that when they leave the shop and offer my finest confections to their dearest chuckaboos that they can always remember where to go to buy some more. This is one of the bags that I would dispense my confections into for my customers c1860
One of my many product lists, this from the mid 1880s. I am sure now that my staff have seen this once more that they will be searching my recipe books to bring many of these products back to life in the coming years.
Perhaps my “Surprise Nuts” will make an appearance once more!
Using only the finest of ingredients and leaving no stone unturned in my pursuit of perfection, my rock and I were lauded throughout the world.
From the very beginning of my enterprise my daddles have never been still and my fine boiled sweets went from strength to strength. Barley sugars adequate to rejuvenate the weariest hiker soon proved popular, as did my astonishingly agreeable Chocolate Limes. Fruit drops filled with toothsome jam and Fruit Rock handmade by some of the world’s most proficient sugar boilers followed, and finally my magnificent and distinct Liquorice and Blackcurrants. As I wrote in 1902
‘’During all the 54 years Charles Butler’s sweets have been manufactured, not an ounce of anything in the way of adulteration has been used, but only ingredients of the purest and best quality that money could purchase, and this has achieved a success which is World wide.”
In everything I produce and sell I have never wavered from my thoroughgoing adherence to these high ideals.
So, now you have knowledge of how it all began and can comprehend why the name Charles Butler is synonymous with world beating quality comestibles.
